The Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (N.D.) degree program at the University of Bridgeport was licensed by the State of Connecticut Department of Higher Education in May 2000 and was accredited by the Council of Naturopathic Medicine in March of 2006. The College's mission is to provide appropriate educational experiences to prepare candidates to become doctors of naturopathic medicine. The College seeks: to teach and search for new knowledge; to educate men and women of personal integrity and social conscience; and to maintain close relationships among faculty, students and community professionals. In keeping with the international focus of the University-wide mission, the College of Naturopathic Medicine emphasizes the importance of understanding the traditional medical systems of the world. The College has identified the following goals in support of its mission:
The College of Naturopathic Medicine is an integrated unit of the University of Bridgeport, a private, non-sectarian, comprehensive university located in southern New England, on the Long Island Sound, just one hour from New York City and three hours from Boston. The UBCNM seeks: to teach and search for new knowledge; to educate men and women of personal integrity and social conscience; and to maintain close relationships among faculty, students and community professionals. In keeping with the international focus of the University of Bridgeport, the College of Naturopathic Medicine emphasizes the importance of understanding the traditional medical systems of the world. The program is an intensive four-year, full-time residential medical degree program. The first year focuses on the basic sciences and the second year on clinical skills and natural therapeutics. There are over 1,000 hours of clinical practice. Our program features small class size, a student/faculty ratio of 10 to 1, full support of the naturopathic physicians in Connecticut with many opportunities for preceptorship in their offices. A bachelor's degree is required prior to entry into the program.
The College maintains an integrative clinic located in the Health Sciences Center at the University of Bridgeport. Housed in the facility along with the naturopathic clinic, its faculty and treatment rooms, is a chiropractic clinic, a counseling center, and a student health services clinic. Our clinic is open to the public five days a week. Patients are cared for by student interns who are supervised by the Chief Medical Officer. Future plans are to expand into branch clinics in other areas of Connecticut and in hospital based facilities where students will be able to serve as resident students in a teaching environment. The University of Bridgeport is committed to being the leader in integrative natural health education, and as a result of that commitment, the UBCNM offers its students unparalleled opportunities to learn in an atmosphere of multi-disciplinary, integrative care, coordinated to best meets the needs of patients seeking a more solution to their health concerns. Tomorrow's health care model is fast becoming today's reality at the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine.
